’WOODEN’ IT BE NICE TO GIVE YOUR FURNITURE A NEW LOOK?

You know those ‘bad hair’ days when no-one gives you a second glance and when you feel as bad as you look?.  But once we’ve scrubbed up and made a bit of an effort – it’s amazing how good that makes us feel.

And funnily enough, we can say the same thing about wooden furniture.  Time and duty take their toll on furniture, and it too can start looking like it needs a makeover of its own to restore its good looks.    OK, so your antiques can’t head to the salon for a pamper session, but you can give it a little pampering of its own.  A little timber polish, a soft cotton cloth and a bit of effort is all that it takes to restore your furniture’s pride – and it’s good looks!.

Is furniture wax the best protection for wood furniture?  Absolutely – and that applies to all timber furniture – not just family heirlooms.

According to one of Australia’s most trusted suppliers of furniture wax and wood polish, Gilly Stephenson, the first step to restoring your furniture is to ascertain what the finish is.  The simple test is to put a few drops of linseed oil on the timber and then give it a gentle rub.  If the surface is oil-based, it will absorb the oil, but if it is a hard finish, it will repel the oil.  Before you can protect the finish, regardless of what type it is, it’s important to clean it.  This can be done by gentle rubbing with a damp soft cloth.  For furniture with an oil-based finish, protection in the form of an annual application of natural furniture wax such as beeswax is perfect.   If the wood has a hard finish, then the best way to protect it is by using a multi surface cream polish.

If your timber furniture is looking a little worse for wear, give it a makeover with a little ‘spit and (timber) polish’….. and it will look as good as new.  Now it’s your turn to make an appointment with the beauty salon….
